It often becomes obvious that a behavior is both a Toward and an Away move. I often use the example of stepping off a curb, seeing a bus coming, fear showing up, and then jumping back on the curb away from the fear, and the bus. Now that’s obviously an Away move, and it’s also a move Toward living. In the moment it was mostly an away move, however.
Other Away/Toward moves are more subtle. You get hungry and start looking for food. Obviously this is an ancient way of warding off starvation and staying alive. In the western world you have choices between junk food and salad. Both can work for warding off starvation and staying alive. However, we all know one of the choices, if done repeatedly, might end up in a shorter life.
How about moving Away from people? Again, it’s probably an ancient way of keeping away from danger and staying alive. However, we are social animals who stay alive to help other people. Avoiding people too much takes us right out of a vital life.
It seems to me than all this stuff we do to understand the self should immediately be turned to doing for others.
